The Crucible Analytical Essay: Lies, Revenge, and Cries of Witchcraft

In 1692, Massachusetts was swept by a wave of witchcraft hysteria. It was inevitable since it was an era of theocracy when the federal government was predicated on religion. When residents were achieved with misfortunes, they blamed them on the Devil. Salem, a little, secluded village in Massachusetts, was one of many towns most afflicted by the claims of witchcraft. A “predilection for minding other people’s business was time-honored among the persons of Salem, and it undoubtedly created lots of the suspicions that have been to feed the approaching madness” (1235). The witch-hunt had not been only a repression, but also “a much time overdue chance of everyone so inclined expressing publicly his guilt and sins, beneath the cover of accusations against the victims” (1237). In The Crucible, Arthur Miller evolves the theme of specific corruption produces cultural chaos through character relationships.
